7 Astonishing Ways To Master Life Skills | Divya Toshniwal |

In the past few years, we have realized that education is not enough for someone to be successful in life. Another important skill has come into the picture and these are popularly known as life skills. Comprising mainly of Emotional Intelligence, life skills have become an important part of our personal and professional lives.

To clarify what are life skills I 'll just simply state that any skill that helps you handle real-life situations better is life skills. These can be learned at any point in life and there is no age barrier. Life skills are - flexibility, communication skills, social skills, presentation skills, stress management skills, self-motivation, productivity, Taking the initiative, negotiation skills, setting goals, and any skill that helps you live a better life personally and professionally.

1. Listening: Just stop speaking for some time and listen to what others have to say. You can learn a lot by just listening to what others have to say. By listening to others I don't mean do as they say or follow their suggestion. Here listening to others means to listen to their stories, their problems, their solutions. Listen to their feelings and thoughts. And to listen you have to stop talking. When you talk more you repeat one thing you learned to 20 different people and learn nothing new, conversely, when you listen you learn 20 different things from 20 different people.

2. Learning A New Language: Learning a new language opens up new channels of communication. It also helps to understand better, a different culture. Learning a new language increases the flexibility in you. It improves memory and also decision-making skills. Leaning a new language helps you to improve your ability to multi-task and also increases your attention span.

3. Reading: To read is to gather a decade long experience in a few hours. Every good book that has been written is an experience of someone. Sometimes of a few years and sometimes of a whole lifetime. You get to know those experiences in a few hours just by reading the book, whether the person himself is alive or dead. There are centuries of experiences to be unfolded in those pages. So get going and make reading an essential part of your life

4. Overcoming Procrastination: One of the biggest and most important changes that you need to bring in your life is overcoming procrastination. Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished by a certain deadline. It could be further stated as a habitual or intentional delay of starting or finishing a task despite knowing it might have negative consequences. You have to create the habit of 'NOW' to not let important opportunities for learning slip away.

5. Finding A Model: Instead of following someone who has followed the conventional path to success find someone who has changed the course of action and changed their life entirely. Model someone who has got major success in a short period of time and learn what were the changes that hey brought in their life. You may get a lot of practical approaches that you can use to affect your life positively.

6. Stress Management: Rather than letting stress hurt your productivity and focus, use it to your advantage as energy to help you perform in high-pressure situations. Stress is of two kinds - eustress and distress. Eustress is good and motivates you to work harder. Without it, you would not be doing anything. The aim of stress management is to not let your stress turn into burn out. Eustress will keep you on feet and help you work better while distress will hamper your productivity.

7. Time Management: Each of us has 24 hours in our day and there are only 3 ways that we spend our time - Thoughts, Conversations, and Actions. Managing time is managing all three of them. It not about always being in actions or always being in thoughts. The conversations need to be balanced too. Bring out a chart and work out how much time you need to spend on each.

Bringing these little changes in life can help you learn the most important life skills.
